We finally played the Metro Tennis Tournament!

We finally played the Metro Blind Sport Tennis Tournament.

It has been two and a half years since the last Metro Blind Sport tennis tournament was played in February 2019. Storm Ciara forced a last-minute cancellation in February 2020 and of course, the global pandemic forced a cancellation of the tournament in November 2020.

On Sunday 12th September Metro Blind Sport members took part in a friendly and competitive series of matches. B1 players took part in a singles competition and the B2-B5 players took part in a mixed double competition.

As always, the players were joined by a willing group of volunteers, who without, we simply wouldn’t be able to run the event.

It was great to welcome some new volunteers to take part. As soon as the clock struck noon, three courts were quickly and expertly set up, under the watchful guidance of Alan and tournament referee Steven. Once the courts were ready and all the players had been registered, play got underway on time (despite the odd issue with transport).

It was great to see players back on the court and particularly pleasing to see new members taking part in the tournament for the first time. The B2-B5 players shared some epic rallies during their games and after all, playing each other once, the final was battled out between Odette and Oli versus Themba and Christine.

There was nothing between them during the whole match and after a long hard-fought match, Odette and Oli triumphed on a sudden death deuce point.

The B1 players were serving amazingly well, even a few cheeky backspin serves were included. There were some great returns happening from the players and just like on the B2-5 courts, games were going the full distance with little to separate them.

Eventually the final was played out between Naqi and Tracy, with Naqi claiming victory after a tense final.

It was great to finally have a tournament for everyone to enjoy and thank you to everyone that played their part in making it a successful day. Trophies were presented to the winners after the games had been completed and volunteers and officials were thanked. Well done to the players and volunteers for making it a special Sunday!
