Walk Leaders and Volunteers Needed!

The project

Metro Blind Sport has secured funding to deliver a walking programme so that blind and partially sighted Londoner’s can collectively benefit from attending walks in various London Parks.

The Metro Blind Sport Walking Project will allow blind and partially sighted Londoners, particularly those who are least active or require support to remain active, to take part in an activity that is easily accessible. It will enable the participants to not only improve physical fitness but equally as importantly, to develop peer support and networks.

We know that walking has many benefits and this programme also provides a great opportunity to deliver activity away from the many restrictions that are being placed on indoor sport.

We need your help

We are now recruiting for paid walk leaders and for volunteers to help deliver the programme. We intend to choose approximately 6-8 parks, throughout London rather than hold the walks in a regular location.

If you are interested in being part of the project from a delivery perspective, then please get in contact. We are seeking to recruit up to 4 walk leaders that could lead sessions on a regular rotational basis. Walk leader training would be provided.

Get in contact

If you would like to part of this exciting project, please email martin.symcox@metroblindsport.org or call Martin on 07508 958927.

What do Walk Leaders do?

During a walk, walk leaders are at the front, middle or back of a group – making sure everyone is safe and happy. Along with Metro Blind Sport staff, leaders will help to plan routes, support walkers and act as ambassadors for walking – showing people that walking really can make a big difference to their lives.

What Skills to I need as a Walk Leader?

The main skill we need from our walk leaders is an enthusiasm for walking and its benefits!

You don’t need any particular experience, but we love our leaders to be friendly and welcoming, with good communication skills; reliable, punctual and well organised; confident at speaking in front of small groups; able to take control and be assertive when needed and observant and sensitive to the needs of others.

How much time do I need to give as a Walk Leader?

Most of our walks are short, around an hour or less. Including travelling, preparation and paperwork, leading a single walk close to home typically takes around 2 and a half to 3 hours, plus meeting and greeting participants, occasional meetings and refresher training. We are hoping that our Walk Leaders can attend two walks per month.

What about payment?

Travel expenses would be paid for walk leaders and volunteers. For the regular Walk Leaders, payment of £25 per hour is available. Walk Leaders would need to invoice Metro Blind Sport on a monthly basis. Travel expenses can be claimed in addition to the hourly rate.

Volunteers

We are also recruiting for volunteers that will support the Walk Leaders. We would expect the volunteers to be friendly and welcoming with a good, open communication style to support blind and partially sighted people to navigate the walks. We are hoping that our volunteers can attend regularly but there is no commitment to attend each week. Training would be provided. Travel expenses can be claimed for volunteers.

News Items

Metro at the House of Lords!

Last week Martin Symcox, Metro Blind Sport CEO, was invited to give evidence at the House of Lords National Sport and Recreation Committee. Martin was in a breakout room with Lord Addington, Baroness Morris and Baroness Brady.

The committee was appointed to consider the effectiveness of current sport and recreation policies and initiatives and the case for a national plan for sport and recreation.

Before the Meeting, Martin contacted a few of our members to get their views. A huge thank you to all who provided their feedback.

Armed with the positive evidence on what sport can help achieve. Martin highlighted the key issues facing young, visually impaired people regarding sport and physical activity directly to the house of Lords.

  • Improve societies awareness and understanding that sight loss isn’t a barrier to participation in, engagement with or enjoyment of sport or physical activity.
  • Increase the skills and knowledge of local sports organisations, providers and facilities about sight loss to make participation in sport and physical activity more accessible and inclusive.
  • Increase the confidence of blind and partially sighted people to take part in sport or get active.

Rainbow Mbuangi, a young man from St. Vincent’s school, joined Martin and shared how his confidence grew considerably since fully partaking in a range of sports he couldn’t previously!  Now Rainbow is a Merseyside Blind and Visually Impaired Football Club player and part of the England Blind Football squad.

It was a rewarding experience for both Martin and Rainbow as they engaged the Lord’s Committee in the issues faced, and it is pleasing to know that they are keen to find solutions.

What happens next?

The committee has been receiving written and oral evidence since December and continue to do so. Historically, evidence committee’s produce a report for the Government based on their findings.  We will update you when we know more.

An online workshop for better access to outdoor activities

The researchers at University College London need help to understand better the outdoor activities of interest to blind and partially sighted people.

They are running an online workshop to explore ways to improve access to outdoor spaces and activities for the blind community in east London. They welcome blind and partially sighted people interested in sharing their experience and explore the challenges of accessing outdoor activities. The workshop will co-create ideas of technologies, resources and design outdoor leisure, sports, arts, and cultural activities for the disabled community in east London and beyond.

This workshop will be run online over Microsoft Teams on 1st April 2021 and will last approximately 3 hours. There will be multiple facilitators to support equal participation during the workshop. Once registered, participants will be invited to take a short screening survey before the workshop. Participants will be compensated £40 for their time.

This workshop is part of Maryam Bandukda’s PhD research at University College London Interaction Centre and Global Disability Innovation Hub. Maryam’s research explores open space engagement of blind and partially sighted people (details on http://maryambandukda.net).

Full details here: https://tinyurl.com/m5m7r6ky

Who can participate in this study?

The ideal participants for this workshop are:

  • people who are blind or partially sighted by birth or have lost sight later in life
  • age 18 and above residents Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest
  • familiar with online meeting platform Microsoft Teams (optional)

Wheels 4 Me

During last year’s lockdown, options for Disabled people to enjoy healthy exercise outdoors were not equal to those for non-Disabled people. In fact, Disabled people were far more likely to be experiencing isolation and lacking opportunities to be active in fresh outdoor air.

When the regular Wheels 4 Wellbeing cycling sessions in south London were paused, they were able to loan a handful of cycles to individuals. From feedback and observation, Wheels 4 Wellbeing saw that a cycle hire for people to take non-standard cycles away to ride on their own terms, for fitness, to try commuting, to join family activities, or any other regular reason to cycle, would potentially make a real difference to individuals – whether in lockdown or out of it.

Excitingly, Sport England agreed and gave Wheels 4 Wellbeing some funding… and a few months later, they are ready to roll with their pilot scheme.

Weekly online event and news Update 10 March 2021

News & Online Event Update

Please find below information that can help you stay active at home and news about resuming some of our activities.

Ride Side-by-Side with Bikeworks and Metro Blind Sport

Good news! The first sessions are confirmed for the Ride Side-by-Side cycling programme that we are arranging with Bikeworks in West London.

With organised outdoor sport being allowed from the end of March, we have arranged for cycling sessions to commence on Tuesday the 30  March and Wednesday the 31 March. There will be two time slots available on each of the days; session 1 is from 9.30 am until 11 am, and session 2 is from 11.30 am until 1 pm.

Let me briefly remind you what these sessions are. Ride Side-by-Side will support people getting around West London areas by pedalling (or choosing not to pedal) on Side-by-Side e-cycles.

Participants can make trips of their choice, solve transport problems, have social interaction, and most importantly, get exercise.

If you are a resident within the boroughs of Kensington and Chelsea, Hammersmith and Fulham and the east of Ealing, then the Bikeworks pilot may come and collect you on the cycle from your home and drop you back again.  For those who want to take part from outside these areas, the cycle route can be arranged to collect and return you to Latimer Road tube station.

Thank you to the generosity of The Edward Gostling Foundation; this project is fully funded and is free to those who attend the cycling sessions.

Bikeworks will be arranging the bookings with those people that are keen to attend. For those that have already expressed an interest to take part, you will hear from us this week.

In the meantime, if you are keen to come along, then please email Martin: martin.symcox@metroblindsport.org. We will then register your interest and connect you to Bikeworks in the coming days.

For now, they are only restarting the Tuesday sessions, with two slots available for bookings: 10 am, and 11 am. They hope to be able to reopen on other days of the week in the near future.
