VIscovery Day on Sat 9 June!

VIscovery Day on Sat 9 June

The Science Museum is holding a VIscovery Day on Saturday 9th June 2018.  VIscovery days include a series of events for families with members who are visually impaired, partially sighted or blind. All events are free and suitable for children aged 5 and over.

Join the Science Museum on 9th June to explore new ideas, innovative stories and cutting-edge technologies. On the day, you’ll be able to: talk to experts, create the sound effects for your very own story, meet Mary Shelley herself, and much more!

Times and details are as follows:

‘Stories and Sounds’– sound effects workshop

Join us to discover what makes a horse’s hooves Clip Clop, or the rain sound Drip Drop. Get hands-on in this fun workshop where you’ll get to explore the wonders of sound, how sound effects are added to stories and even record your own.

Sessions at:

  • 11.00 (for children aged 5-7. Approx. 45 mins)
  • 12.15 (for children aged 7+. Approx. 1 hour)
  • 14:30 (for children aged 7+. Approx. 1 hour)

‘Creative Creatures’– workshop

Have you ever wondered what would happen if you combined the strength of a diamond, the intelligence of a dolphin and the wings of an aeroplane? In this workshop the only limitation is your imagination. You will be able to talk about new technologies and their challenges, then be the scientist creating you very own model of artificial life.

Sessions at:

  • 11.15 (for children aged 7+. Approx. 45 mins)
  • 12.30 (for children aged 5-7. Approx. 30 mins)
  • 13:30 (for children aged 7+. Approx. 45 mins)

‘Meet Mary’ – Mary Shelley drama character

Sometimes you need a spark of imagination to start a story. Meet Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein, and uncover the scientific inventions that inspired her book. It’s shockingly good fun!

Sessions at:  10:30, 11.15, 12.45 and 13.30 (All for children aged 7+. Approx. 30 mins)

To create the best possible experience for all our visitors, it’s important for us to know some information about who’s attending the events. To book, please state:

  • The events you’d like to take part in
  • What time slot you’d prefer
  • The number of members in your family attending
  • The ages of all the children coming along.

All events are free, but places are limited. If you are interested in attending any of the events or would like some more information, please email familyprogrammes@ScienceMuseum.ac.uk or call on 0207 942 4086.

The Science Museum has recently hosted a festival to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, which raised many interesting questions, such as: ‘Should we create life?’, ‘How far can new technologies go?’, ‘What new stories can we create?’.

Join the Science Museum on 9th June to explore new ideas, innovative stories and cutting-edge technologies. On the day, you’ll be able to: talk to experts, create the sound effects for your very own story, meet Mary Shelley herself, and much more!
