Tandem Cycling With MSSC

Merton Sports and Social Club for Visually Impaired People (MSSC) has been organising tandem cycle rides for over thirty years from its base in Colliers Wood.  The club has a fleet of tandem bicycles and pairs up sighted front riders with visually impaired back riders for regular outings.  The rides are short and long to various destinations, and always include a stop at a café or a pub.  Whether it be along quiet country lanes or following the Wandle trail, the atmosphere is convivial and enjoyed by all.  It’s a great way to have fun and keep fit.  New members are always welcome, regardless of ability or experience.

‘Have a Go” workshops

MSSC  runs regular ‘Have a Go” workshops for anyone who is keen to learn how to ride a tandem, either as a back rider (stoker) or a front rider (pilot).   Stokers can try riding a tandem with an experienced cyclist and practise their pedalling technique, while pilots can learn the basics of handling a tandem and how to interact and communicate with visually impaired stokers.

Following the training,  the short rides held every third Saturday of the month are ideal to start with. No more than 25 miles, and following quiet routes as much as possible, these rides are very social and relaxed. On the first Sunday of the month, we pedal off on the longer ride, venturing further afield, covering around 40 or so miles, equally rewarding but a little harder work.  During the spring and summer, we have a weekly evening ride and also run cycling weekends with an overnight stay.

MSSC’s next tandem training/confidence building workshop will be held on Saturday, 25th January 2020.  The session is open to anyone keen to learn how to ride the front of a tandem and those who have already tried but would like to develop their skills and confidence further. Light refreshments will be provided.

Tandem Cycling with Merton Sport and Social Club

MSSC is based in Colliers Wood, London SW19.  The club has a fleet of tandems and  pair sighted front riders with vision impaired back riders for regular rides, mainly on quiet roads and trails.

We have enjoyed some great rides so far this year in varying types of weather!  Now that spring is in the air and the hours of daylight are extending, we are looking ahead and hoping to plan some all day rides plus some gentle evening excursions and even a weekend cycling trip, to make the most of the lighter, longer days.

MONTHLY SHORT AND LONG RIDES

Essentially, all you need to remember is that, as a general rule, the long ride is around 30 to 40 miles and is on the first Sunday, while the short ride is around 15 to 25 miles on the third Saturday.

Unless otherwise stated, all rides start at 8.30am from the Guardian Centre and include a refreshment stop.  Please endeavour to arrive promptly, so that the bikes can be prepared in good time for a 9.00 departure.  We TRY TO make it a priority to see that the long ride returns by 3.00pm and the short ride by 1.00pm, so waiting for latecomers to arrive can mean the ride has to be cut short.

MSSC Programme of Cycling rides 2019

Below are ride dates for the next few months of 2019  (S stands for short, L for long and E for evening). The all day rides will be at least 50 miles in length, with several refreshment stops, and will return early evening.

Metro Blind Sport  would always advise contacting the event contact to confirm there have been no last-minute changes or cancellations

October:

  • Saturday 19th (S)

If you are a stoker, please email cycling@mssc.org.uk to book on to a ride as soon as possible, preferably with at least a fortnight’s notice.  Securing sufficient pilots tends to be a demanding task, and places on a ride will be allocated on a first come first served basis.  If you are a pilot, letting us know your availability well in advance is hugely helpful.  The ride organiser will confirm whether or not sufficient pilots are available by the Thursday before the ride; if you have not heard by then, please contact us to check your name is definitely on the list.

if you are willing to lead a ride or recommend a particular destination, please let us know, as we are keen to broaden our base of ride leaders and expand our repertoire of routes.

Look forward to hearing from you.
