My Prudential RideLondon get on your bikes 15-16 Aug

My Prudential RideLondon 15 and 16 August 2020

Get on your bike – or scooter, skateboard, trike, tandem, penny farthing, roller skates, unicycle – to help save the UK’s charities!

The eighth edition of Prudential RideLondon was due to take place on 15 and 16 August 2020, and while the festival can’t go ahead as planned, we want to keep the wheels moving and celebrate the event weekend by encouraging people to get on their bikes – or any other non-motorised wheeled transport! – and help save the UK’s charities in the process.

My Prudential RideLondon is building on the success of The 2.6 Challenge – created following the postponement of the London Marathon – which became the biggest collective fundraising effort in the world, raising more than £11 million and involving nearly 4,000 charities.

My Prudential RideLondon is your chance to take part in the world’s greatest free festival of cycling. Whatever your age or ability, you can join in – wherever you live in the UK and with whoever you like – family, friends or by yourself.

It’s your rideyour way,  for the charity of your choice!

The Covid-19 pandemic has had a catastrophic effect on the UK’s charities, with the cancellation of thousands of fundraising events and the loss of billions in income.

Many charities have had to reduce or stop services at a time when vulnerable members of society need them most. Thousands of staff have been placed on furlough, and one in 10 charities face bankruptcy, while the sector as a whole faces a funding gap of more than £10 billion in 2020.

Over seven years, the Prudential RideLondon festival of cycling has inspired hundreds of thousands of people to get on their bikes, raising £77 million for thousands of charities in the process.

This year, we can’t all ride together, but we can unite for My Prudential RideLondon to celebrate cycling and support the UK’s charities.

Wheels for Wellbeing restarted Monday Sessions!

Wheels for Wellbeing restarted Monday Sessions!

At Wheels for Wellbeing, we have restarted our Monday sessions at Herne Hill Velodrome in Southwark, although we are operating a booking system (groups of up to 6 people cycling for 45 minutes, over a 3-hour period – i.e. a total of 18 people).

Tandem Cycling only supported if both tandem riders are from the same social  Bubble

WfW won’t be doing any tandem riding unless 2 people are from the same bubble. It would be too unbearable to cycle with a mask and visor (imo) which would be the safest way.

However, side by side cycles should be OK if both riders have masks and visors. Bikeworks have just restarted their “Ride Side by Side project”, for example.

During our sessions I’m encouraging our support workers/carer etc. to cycle with their disabled cyclist, though, so I have yet to mask/visor up for cycling with someone. We have a married couple who are both VI who we can’t accommodate at the moment, sadly.

At the moment our Dare to Ride project is very small scale organised rides for those who are best suited to riding away from roads i.e. in parks, unless people have their own cycles  in which case I can organise longer rides….mainly on an individual basis so that people cycle in their own communities.

I would usually train a tandem pilot initially by having them cycling as a stoker so that they get to understand how that feels. That’s impossible to do too!

Hope that helps to understand where we’re at with regards to tandem cycling.

This is in line with British Cycling and Government guidelines around social distancing. Unfortunately, our sessions at Croydon Sports Arena and Ladywell Day Centre are yet to re-start, as the venues we host at are still closed.

We also have a new project called “Dare to Ride”, which consists of led rides around parks, on roads and other local areas in south London – there may be scope for some tandem riding, which the Senior Administrator/Session Manager will be able to help you more with!

Tandem Cycling With MSSC

Tandem Cycling with Merton Sports and Social Club for VI People

Tandem Cycling With MSSC

Merton Sports and Social Club for Visually Impaired People (MSSC) has been organising tandem cycle rides for over thirty years from its base in Colliers Wood.  The club has a fleet of tandem bicycles and pairs up sighted front riders with visually impaired back riders for regular outings.  The rides are short and long to various destinations, and always include a stop at a café or a pub.  Whether it be along quiet country lanes or following the Wandle trail, the atmosphere is convivial and enjoyed by all.  It’s a great way to have fun and keep fit.  New members are always welcome, regardless of ability or experience.

‘Have a Go” workshops

MSSC  runs regular ‘Have a Go” workshops for anyone who is keen to learn how to ride a tandem, either as a back rider (stoker) or a front rider (pilot).   Stokers can try riding a tandem with an experienced cyclist and practise their pedalling technique, while pilots can learn the basics of handling a tandem and how to interact and communicate with visually impaired stokers.

Following the training,  the short rides held every third Saturday of the month are ideal to start with. No more than 25 miles, and following quiet routes as much as possible, these rides are very social and relaxed. On the first Sunday of the month, we pedal off on the longer ride, venturing further afield, covering around 40 or so miles, equally rewarding but a little harder work.  During the spring and summer, we have a weekly evening ride and also run cycling weekends with an overnight stay.

MSSC’s next tandem training/confidence building workshop will be held on Saturday, 25th January 2020.  The session is open to anyone keen to learn how to ride the front of a tandem and those who have already tried but would like to develop their skills and confidence further. Light refreshments will be provided.
