19th September saw a return of the competitive football season for London Metro Futsal Club with the PSFL Open Cup. London took two strong teams with some changes in personnel with Bish coming into the ‘A’ team and Mark Bond and Ryan Jones making their debuts for the ‘B’ team.

Seven teams entered the competition including London Metro A, Birmingham, North West Scorpions and RNC from Division 1, London Metro B from Division 2 and a team new to the PSFL, Winsford Wolves. Each team played the others once in a group stage with the top four teams going on to qualify for the semi-finals.

Before the two teams met, London Metro A had gone unbeaten through the group stage, comfortably seeing off Winsford and RNC and gaining hard-fought draws with Birmingham and Scorpions. London Metro B had started with a draw against RNC and edged a tight victory over Winsford before losses to Scorpions and Birmingham. Having matched RNC’s results, the ‘B’ team needed to lose by 3 goals or fewer to go through to their first semi-final and scraped through with the last kick of their game against the ‘A’ team, losing 8-5.

London ‘A’ were commanding against Scorpions in the semi-final cruising through 3-0 however London ‘B’ found it very difficult against Birmingham in the other semi, losing 11-3. The group game between London ‘A’ and Birmingham had been tight but they ‘A’ team just fell short as a strong Birmingham team scored a couple of early goals to take the stuffing out of the ‘A’ team and triumphed 7-1 in the final. The ‘B’ team ran Scorpions closer than they had in the group fixtures but also fell to defeat, to finish 4th on the day.

Both teams can take positives from the day going into the first league tournament in October with the ‘B’ team looking to mount a promotion challenge and the ‘A’ team looking to reclaim their league title from Birmingham.
