Ski for Light New Location!

Ski for Light is Going to a Brand-new Place!

Ski for Light is Going to a Brand-new Place!

By Judy Dixon, SFL 2020 Event Chair

The SFL 2020 event is coming together and it is going to be terrific. In late September, members of the SFL planning committee visited Casper, Wyoming, to see firsthand the specifics of our venue for the 45th annual Ski for Light International week. While we were there, the temperatures dropped into the low 40’s and it was actually possible to imagine that one day, it might snow again. We were delighted to find a small Western town with lots of local interest and very friendly people.

Mike Evelo, our SFL 2020 Trails Coordinator, found that the Casper Mountain Outdoor Center, where we will be skiing, has that wonderful combination of both flat and gently rolling areas great for teaching beginners and for holding technique sessions, and that it also boasts forested areas with trails that have a lot of variety and many intersections to build up 5k and 10k courses. This ski area is famous for its biathlon competitions, including accessible equipment, so we are planning a Ski for Light biathlon on Thursday with plenty of time to practice.

The Ramkota Hotel and Conference Center, the event hotel for the week, is a compact facility that is very easy to navigate. There is an indoor pool on the first floor, the same floor on which all our meetings and activities will take place.

Again this year, we will hold our incredible silent auction and, by popular demand, we are bringing back the Ski for Light talent show. So, be sure and bring your talent with you to the event and be ready to audition on Tuesday afternoon. Other evening activities will feature a highly-recommended local deejay and several surprises.

If you haven’t already applied to attend, please do so soon by going to www.sfl.org/events/next

Visit the SFL website at www.sfl.org to learn the complete details of the 2020 event, and to complete and submit your online application to attend.

I look forward to seeing each of you at the 2020 Ski for Light event. The excitement of a new venue in a state rarely visited by many of us will no doubt make this a very special SFL year!

Cost For The Week

The total cost for the week will depend on which housing option you select, as follows:

  • Double-occupancy, $890 per person
  • Single-occupancy, $1,230

The Ramkota Hotel and Conference Center, the event hotel for the week, is a compact facility that is very easy to navigate. There is an indoor pool on the first floor, the same floor on which all our meetings and activities will take place.

Again this year, we will hold our incredible silent auction and, by popular demand, we are bringing back the Ski for Light talent show. So, be sure and bring your talent with you to the event and be ready to audition on Tuesday afternoon. Other evening activities will feature a highly-recommended local deejay and several surprises.

The Application Process and Acceptance to the Event

In order to attend the Ski for Light International Week in 2020, you must first complete and submit an event application, linked below. The application asks for your contact and personal information, your desired meal and housing options for the week, and about your skiing ability and experience.

Ski for Light will review the information in your application and make a decision about whether or not you can be accepted to attend the event. Important considerations in this evaluation are your skiing ability and experience if applying to be a guide, and the number of guides anticipated and your ability to participate in cross-country skiing if applying to be a visually- or mobility-impaired participant.

Applicants will be formally admitted quickly, in the order that they apply. It may become necessary later in the process to delay admitting additional visually- and mobility-impaired applicants until additional guides have applied. Get your application in early to reduce this risk.

While there is no formal deadline for the submission of applications, it should be anticipated that applications submitted after November 1 will be accepted only on a space available basis.

Ski For Light 2017

Ski for light 2017

One of our members, Janice,  flew out on Friday 3rd February, and the ski week finished on Sunday 13th February 2017.

If you are wanting to learn to Cross Country Ski and improve your technique, Janice recommends Ski For Light is the place to go.  We were at 7-8 thousand feet, so it does make you a bit breathless, so it is a help if you can arrive there with some fitness.  You are expected to ski every day while you are there, and the guides I have found to be  mostly excellent.

The social side of things is good too, with over 100 blind skiers, each with a guide, and a few sit skiers too.  Ski For Light is held at a different venue each year, and often returning to Colorado, so the terrain can be mixed. There is varied entertainment in the evenings, and one evening, it was dedicated to The Wild West, and as well as Square Dancing, there was a mechanical Bull, which many of us had a go on, and does take a lot of strength to hang on, and the cheers and jeers from the crowd, and the commentator is all part of the fun.

If you are interested in going for Ski for Light next year check out their website: http://www.sfl.org.  Ski for Light 2018 Date:  21 Jan to 28 Jan.

We will be skiing at Tahoe-Donner Cross Country ski area in Truckee, California, and staying at the Nugget Hotel Resort in Sparks, Nevada .

Good luck and break a leg to the large party of Metro cross country skiers going to Norway on the 26th March 2017 for 1 week, many of whom this is their first time and we look forward to receiving some feedback from them.
