New cycling session at Herne Hill Velodrome with Wheels for Wellbeing!

we are pleased to announce that we are able to open another session at Herne Hill Velodrome. This will be held on Friday mornings, between 10:00 am and 12:00 pm, starting on 18th September 2020.  Booking Required

Please note that our sessions are no longer running as drop-ins, so booking is now essential. If you haven’t got a confirmed booking, you will not be able to cycle.
If you want to read more and learn how to book a space, please click here.

These new Friday sessions will be open to all ages and will welcome new participants as well as existing cyclists. For the time being, Monday sessions remain reserved for existing Wheels for Wellbeing participants only and Sunday “Kids on Wheels” sessions continue to be exclusively for Disabled children up to 18 years old and their families (new or existing).

Covid-secure

In line with guidance from the government, the same Covid-secure measures will be in place on Fridays as the measures we have introduced on Mondays and Sundays. We want to make sure that participants, carers and our staff members are safe during the sessions.

Inclusive cycling sessions

We run inclusive cycling sessions for disabled people and their families, carers or friends, from three bases in south London. Our qualified instructors, supported by fantastic volunteers, help participants try our cycles or get comfortable on the one that suits them, and offer ongoing support.

Due to the Covid-19 outbreak, booking a space at a specific time slot is required at all our sessions. Please note that we will not be accepting participants on a drop-in basis.

How to book a place at the session?

If you would like to book a place for yourself or your client/family member at any of our sessions, please send an email to bookings@wheelsforwellbeing.org.uk providing answers to all the questions below:

  • Full name of the cyclist(s)
  • Full names of any supporter/family member attending with the cyclist(s) – please kindly limit the numbers of non-Disabled supporters who attend to a minimum, in order that we can provide places to a maximum of Disabled people.
  • Preferred date and time slot. Please note that we do not take bookings more than 2 weeks in advance.
  • What cycle you/your client would like to book and what cycle should be booked for a supporter/family member (this only applies for people that have attended our sessions before and know what cycle they like to use – on Fridays, our team will support new participants to find out which of our cycles works best for them during their first session).

In order to give us the time to organise our sessions and to send you a confirmation email or to let you know if we are fully booked, bookings close at:

  • 12:00 pm on Wednesday for that week’s Friday session
  • 12:00 pm on Friday for that week’s Kids on Wheels Sunday session
  • 12:00 pm on Friday for the following Monday’s session

If you email after the above deadline, we will only be able to book you for the following week’s session.

We will confirm each booking by sending you a confirmation email. Please bring your confirmation email with you to the session (either by printing it or having it on your phone). Please do not attend the session if you have not received the booking confirmation of your slot as you will not be allowed to cycle.

Wheels for Wellbeing restarted Monday Sessions!

Wheels for Wellbeing restarted Monday Sessions!

At Wheels for Wellbeing, we have restarted our Monday sessions at Herne Hill Velodrome in Southwark, although we are operating a booking system (groups of up to 6 people cycling for 45 minutes, over a 3-hour period – i.e. a total of 18 people).

Tandem Cycling only supported if both tandem riders are from the same social  Bubble

WfW won’t be doing any tandem riding unless 2 people are from the same bubble. It would be too unbearable to cycle with a mask and visor (imo) which would be the safest way.

However, side by side cycles should be OK if both riders have masks and visors. Bikeworks have just restarted their “Ride Side by Side project”, for example.

During our sessions I’m encouraging our support workers/carer etc. to cycle with their disabled cyclist, though, so I have yet to mask/visor up for cycling with someone. We have a married couple who are both VI who we can’t accommodate at the moment, sadly.

At the moment our Dare to Ride project is very small scale organised rides for those who are best suited to riding away from roads i.e. in parks, unless people have their own cycles  in which case I can organise longer rides….mainly on an individual basis so that people cycle in their own communities.

I would usually train a tandem pilot initially by having them cycling as a stoker so that they get to understand how that feels. That’s impossible to do too!

Hope that helps to understand where we’re at with regards to tandem cycling.

This is in line with British Cycling and Government guidelines around social distancing. Unfortunately, our sessions at Croydon Sports Arena and Ladywell Day Centre are yet to re-start, as the venues we host at are still closed.

We also have a new project called “Dare to Ride”, which consists of led rides around parks, on roads and other local areas in south London – there may be scope for some tandem riding, which the Senior Administrator/Session Manager will be able to help you more with!
