A former member of the London Metro Futsal Club and the Cricket Team

This is an event organised outside of TPT and Metro but will raise funds for charity and celebrate the memory of Charles who passed away suddenly and unexpectedly in 2017.

Sussex Win Heindrich Memorial Cup!

The second British Blind Sport Primary Club Heindrich Swanepoel Memorial Cup Final to be played at the cradle of cricket, Broadhalfpenny Down, in the glorious Hampshire south downs was an excellent day.

The hosts were very generous and welcoming and support, as ever, from the Primary Club was essential in making this game and the BBS cup competition happen every year.
The match day programme had a carefully selected cover showing Charles Ronayne of Metro, Northants and Essex Tigers in action for Metro against Warwickshire; the day included a minutes’ silence closed with a well deserved round of applause in memory of Charles. The weather was excellent for cricket as bright blue skies with just a few friendly white clouds meant plenty of warm sunshine but with just a little breeze.

The cricket started with Justin Hollingsworth of Warwickshire, cup winners in five of the past six seasons, winning the toss and asking Sussex to bat first

Missing their injured skipper, Sussex started with Joe Harrison and Alex Towers. This pair batted carefully to blunt the opening bowlers’ spells, but this meant that the scoring rate was slow. The openers only managed one boundary before both falling victim to Asif Ali in his first spell, with a bowled and an lbw. His brother then chipped in, shortly afterwards, with a run out to dismiss Dave Daniels and leave Sussex wobbling a little on 41 for 3.

Dan Field had come to the crease at two down and had now had time to settle, and to bring his excellent form from the season into the middle. He started by bossing a stand of nearly 50 with the hard hitting Toby Collins only contributing 12, before perhaps the first example of the great wicket keeping on display throughout the day from both sides.

Toby looked for a little reverse scoop off the bowling of Mark Turnham which Gerald Porter on seeing the shot set up anticipated and was able to grab the top edge. It seemed a big total was going to be tricky with just 84 scored. However Dan now started to control the game with the bat dominating the ball and able to score almost at will.

He kept the strike carefully during a partnership of 58 for the fifth wicket; ended only when Luke Sugg ran out Ian Morris, but Dan’s domination continued to the end as Matt Greenhough sacrificed his wicket with a run out to allow Dan to score two off the last ball and finish on 121 having struck a six and 14 fours. This places him fourth on the all time list of top scorers in the cup final; the last three finals having now produced four big hundreds, when only one had been managed before that.

The second innings started in exactly the opposite way to the Sussex innings as the Bears captain, Justin Hollingsworth, looked to score quickly from the first ball. He raced to 28, with a six and three boundaries, before being bowled in Dave Daniels’ opening spell.

This was 46 for 1 with the Bears well ahead of the rate and the scoring did not slow when Nathan Foy joined Luke Sugg in the middle. He sped to 20 from just eight balls before trying to repeat the shot that had earned him a six over square leg, only to be caught by the well placed Joe Harrison just inside the rope. So 77 for 2 but, with two big hitters gone, the game seemed well balanced as Luke Sugg looked to try and repeat Dan’s feat of controlling the innings.

At the half way stage, the Bears were on 97/3 – well ahead of the 64/3 Sussex had posted at the same stage – but soon after the break they lost two wickets with the score on 100, Luke caught by Dave Daniels on the full and then Hassan Ali bowled by Dave Daniels.

At 100 for 5 their chance of winning had gone, it seemed. Chris Styles scored a few including two good boundaries, and the reliable Mark Turnham also reached double figures but no one else was able to score and the innings finished in less than 21 overs with the difference in scores being 61.

The day ended in front of the excellent pavilion, with Peter Tuke, the chairman of the Broadhalfpenny Down Preservation Trust, assisted by Pete Sugg from the BCEW cricket committee handing the cup to the winning captain, trophies to all the players and officials, and the Man of the Match awards to the two worthy winners, Dan Field (Partially Sighted) and David Daniels (Total).

London Metro Futsul Club PSFL Tournament 6 Report

London Metro Futsal Club went to the last league tournament of the season with mainly pride to play for with both teams secure in their positions in the league. Injury and illness in the ‘A’ team led to first ‘A’ team tournaments this season for Jay Start and Matt Dean and gave a chance for some ‘B’ team players to come in, with Neal Byrne making his London Metro debut and Mark Bond playing only his second tournament of the season.

It was a difficult day for both teams with a minutes’ silence before the tournament for London Metro member Chris East, who tragically died aged 19. Chris came up through the junior team. He was present at a lot of training sessions and had played a couple of tournaments for the London ‘B’ team. The PSFL have offered to rename the end of season Open Cup Tournament for 2016 in his memory, which is a gesture which the club appreciates.

The ‘A’ team started the day well against North West Scorpions, going 2-0 up early in the second half. However, a strong comeback and tired legs showed as Scorpions went 3-2 up with almost the last kick of the game. Next game was against a Lisburn team at the bottom of the table and needing to win all of their games to stay in the division however London ‘A’ enjoyed a comfortable 4-2 victory. In the last two games against Loughborough and Birmingham, London ‘A’ competed well but switched off at bad times and lost both games, 1-2 and 5-7 respectively. This gave the team second place in the league, four points ahead of Scorpions but 20 points behind runaway winners Birmingham.

London Metro ‘B’ started the day knowing they would finish bottom of division 2. Despite a couple of good results, the team had been very inconsistent both with team members and results. They also knew that there would be no easy games on the last day, with only three points separating the other three teams so with each having a chance to win the title. However, the ‘B’ team never really got going, with a 5-2 loss again Winsford followed by a 7-2 loss against South West Rovers and a 7-3 loss in what was a dead rubber against RNC. South West Rovers won the league but with the ‘B’ team finishing bottom by 20 points, there is plenty to work on before the end of season Open Cup.

Both teams know they have a lot to work on, but with hard work and a good spirit in the April Cup hopes are high for a successful tournament.

Partially Sighted Football – Open Cup

London Metro Futsal Club took two teams to a tournament for the first time for the open cup at the start of the 2014 / 15 season. A positive increase in player numbers at training and continued invaluable support from both Metro Sports Club for the Blind and the Primary Club have meant the club entering two teams in the league and the Open Cup was a chance for several members of the ‘B’ team to get a taste of competitive action for the first time.

7 teams attended the first tournament with London ‘A’, RNC Bulls, North West Scorpions and Loughborough from the league Division 1 and London ‘B’, Sporting Albion and Hampshire Bats from Division 2. Each team would play a round robin against the other 6 teams and the top four teams at that stage would play semi-finals and finals.

London ‘A’ started strongly with victories against RNC, Sporting Albion and Hampshire without conceding a goal. North West Scorpions were out to impress against the top teams having been promoted from Division 2 in the league and won a tight game against the ‘A’ team 2-1 but victories against Loughborough and the ‘B’ team meant they qualified comfortably in second in the group behind the Scorpions.

The London ‘B’ team played well in patches in losses to Scorpions and Loughborough but were unable to score a goal however their third game against Hampshire saw them notch up their first competitive victory with a 3-0 win against Hampshire. That was a good as it got for the team though as an unfortunate injury in the fourth game which left the team with 5 players to finish the day made life difficult and they were unable to register another goal in defeats to RNC and Sporting and were knocked out of the tournament alongside Hampshire.

London ‘A’ played RNC in the semi-final and were behind at half time but a better second half performance meant the game was tied at full time and penalties were needed to separate the teams. London were able to triumph 3-2 and move on to play Scorpions in the final, who had been unbeaten through the round-robin stage.

London stepped their game up in the final and had too much for Scorpions, triumphing 4-1 to claim their third tournament in a row to hold all three cups simultaneous which is a great achievement. The ‘B’ team competed well for their first tournament and can look forward to a year in Division 2 with competitive action and hopefully a few more victories.

VIFL Division 1 – Tournament 2 Report

London Futsal Club moved to the top of VIFL Division 1 with full points from their three games in Tournament two. Starting the day one point behind Birmingham, London came from the shock of going 4-1 behind very early to beat the league leaders 5-7 with 6 unanswered goals at one stage.

A comprehensive 9-1 win over Lisburn Rovers followed before another tight 5-3 win over RNC, the same score-line as the previous tournament.

London have opened up a five point gap above Birmingham but, having not won a game against Birmingham or RNC by more than two goals this year, both teams will be confident of taking points off them in Tournament 3 to close the gap.

The success at this tournament was followed by another at the Waltham Forest Sports Awards, where three members of the team were presented with an Inclusive Sports Award.

Results: Birmingham 5-7 London, Lisburn Rovers 1-9 London, RNC 3-5 London.
