Athletics Open 2022 – A Huge Success!

Photo of the start fo the 100m junior track race at the Athletics Open 2022

The Athletics Open 2022 shone and not because of the blue skies and sunshine!

It could have been one of many reasons. 68 competitors, with over 52 individual events! Some competitors came from as far away as Poland and Santa Barbara, California. All determined to beat their personal best and win that elusive medal!

There is nothing like the Athletics Open! The loud starter pistol, the cheers as you run past, or the sound of running shoes hitting the track.

Martin did a great job as the compere this year! He announced the races. Encouraged the competitors and let you know who was running past, about to jump or throw.

We had 38 amazing volunteers & officials, with 16 being guide runners. New faces learned the ropes from experienced volunteers and expert officials! Sharing knowledge is priceless.

This year’s Athletics Open was golden! A fun and uplifting day. The Metro team thanks everyone who volunteered and participated. As you all helped make this event shine!

A big shoutout to Martin, Lucy, Joyce & Roy for all their hard work!

Here are some of the fantastic photos from the day from Chris Vaughan Photography

The Festival of Athletics (Endorsed by England Athletics) will again offer those new to the sport a chance to try out running, jumping and throwing in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. Qualified England Athletics coaches will be on hand to advise and guide you. All ages and abilities are very welcome so come along and try!

This year coaching and advice will be available to adults and young people, who are either interested in trying a new event or improving their technique. Competition will begin after the Festival and we will again be joined by a UK Athletics talent spotter looking out for future Athletics Stars! Events will be held for Under 18’s, Senior’s and Veterans.

I just wanted to say a personal thank-you on behalf of Metro Blind Sport Staff and Trustee’s for all your hard work at the Athletics Open on Saturday.

I have been receiving tweets and emails from athletes saying what a great time they had, one group from Berkshire shared a group photo proudly displaying their major trophy haul. I also had many, many thank you’s on the day with comments like “Fantastic event” and “thank you so much for the opportunity to race”.

To see you all guiding, chatting, shouting from the side lines and generally mucking-in wherever needed was so nice to be part of. You all helped to make a difference, I hope that some or all of you will be able to come along next year and support us again for the big 40!!

All the Best, Ian Francis

Below are the names of the trophy winners here:

Senior men: Rojimon Cheriman
Senior Women: Ruth Stacey
Junior men: Andrew Pettigrew
Junior women: Kali Holder
