Metro would advise to always phone or email the Event contacts, to confirm that there have been no changes to the event time or date to avoid possible disappointment.

HSBC UK Disability Hub Race days

We have a number of confirmed HSBC UK Disability Hub dates across the country. To view these and book onto any of the sessions please see link: http://po.st/UHCXU2

We have introduced a few new aspects to the disability hub sessions this year which include:

My Personal Best – Across all disability hub sessions, coaches will be offering riders the opportunity to complete a personal best time on their hub circuit. This data will be recorded and riders will have the chance to improve on this throughout the year.

HSBC UK Disability Hub Race Days – A selection of the disability hubs will be running race events in 2018 to provide riders with the opportunity to test themselves in a number of different race categories with riders of a similar ability. The HSBC UK Disability Hub Race days will provide riders a great opportunity to experience racing for the first time before progressing into regional or national competition. HSBC UK Disability Hub Race days will be taking place in Leeds, Tameside, Nottingham and London.

HSBC UK Disability Hub Track Sessions– We have also secured six track coaching sessions at Lee Valley Velopark & The National Cycling Centre in Manchester to complement the circuit sessions running throughout the country. These are open to beginner and more experienced track riders. Booking is via the online events page on the British Cycling website: http://po.st/UHCXU2.

I would encourage anyone looking to attend any of these sessions to book early via the online booking page. This allows our coaches time to plan the sessions in advance, booking online also provides riders with a discounted rate for each session.

If anyone wanted to bring along their own pilot rider then this is also fine. I would suggest the pilot rider contact PhilBall@britishcycling.org.uk  so we can book them onto the session, this also avoids the pilot rider been charged for the sessions as all pilot riders will ride free of charge.

In regards to age and bike size. We do not have a cut off for this but we do only have access to adult size tandems at the moment. We may have other bikes on site that can be used by children, so it would be worth contacting PhilBall@britishcycling.org.uk before booking.

Companion Cycling

Companion Cycling

Companion Cycling is a project which enables people who are unable to ride “solo” to enjoy cycling with a companion in the lovely environment of Bushy Park.

Anyone, whatever their ability or mobility, can become a cyclist using a special cycle and with the aid of a “pilot” who might be a carer, a friend, a family member or a Companion Cycling volunteer.

Companion Cycling is situated in the Stockyard (adjacent to the Park Offices, off Hampton Court Road)

Companion Cycling is a registered charity.

What we do at Charlotte’s Tandems

We lend, at no cost (i.e. for free), tandems and tag-alongs to (and only to) people with disabilities or additional needs, who are unable to ride a bike safely on their own, so that they can enjoy the wonders of cycling.

Tandem Cycling with MSSC

MSSC Dates for Upcoming Tandem Rides

As a rule, the long rides, on the first Sunday of each month, are around 30 to 40 miles and the short rides, on the third Saturday, are around 15 to 20 miles. Unless otherwise stated, all begin from the Guardian Centre at 8.30am and return by 1.00pm or 3.00pm in the case of the longer rides.  A refreshment stop will always be included.  Destinations are announced closer to the time of the ride.

Ride dates for the next few months are as follows:

  • Sunday 2nd December – Long ride.
  • No short ride in December.
  • Sunday 6th January – long ride
  • Saturday 19th January – short ride

To book a place on a ride, please email cycling@mssc.org.uk

To avoid disappointment, it is crucial to give plenty of notice as it is generally a challenging task to secure enough front riders and we can only accommodate as many stokers as there are pilots available.  It is also extremely helpful if pilots can let us know their availability well in advance.

Try a tandem day

MSSC is always looking to recruit more front riders.  To this end, we will be running another tandem pilot training/confidence building workshop at the Guardian Centre between 10.00am and 1.00pm on Saturday, 10th November.  The session is open to any cyclists, keen to learn how to ride the front of a tandem and those who have already tried, but would like to develop their skills and confidence.

As well as cycling practice, the session will also include some sight loss awareness and guiding skills, with the aim of improving communication with and confidence around vision impaired back riders (stokers).

To book or for more info, email: cycling@mssc.org.uk or phone Richard on 07500 913 223.

The Tandem Club

The Tandem Club

The Tandem Club is recommend by Monica Smith, one of our Metro Trustees, so definitely worth checking out.

The Tandem Club have groups in London and you can ring their local groups and ask if there are any members willing to be front-riders. They have a for sale board and are also now doing audio versions of their journals.

About the Tandem Club

The Tandem Club was formed in the UK in 1971 primarily to provide otherwise unobtainable spare parts and technical advice on how to maintain the older machines. This is still an important function but since then the Club has developed along with the increased interest in tandems, extending the range of services and benefits it offers to its members, and currently the Club has a world wide membership of over 5,000 members.

Throughout the UK over 40 Regional Officers organise Tandem Club activities on a local basis. They can be contacted to find out what is happening in their area or for advice on how to arrange activities.

Both within and outside the UK there are members who are willing to give advice to members touring in their country and to provide emergency assistance.

Many national events are organised by members throughout the year in the UK, and events are arranged from time to time, usually every year, in another European country. Details of these events are published in the Club’s bi-monthly Journal and are shown in Major TC Events and the What’s On Guide.
