Research participants Needed for testing AD in Virtual Reality

RNIB Seeking Research Participants: Developing enjoyable and engaging Audio Description (AD) for Virtual Reality and 360 Videos

RNIB wish to promote a research opportunity – they are seeking another eight blind or partially sighted participants to test some virtual reality audio description technology later this month. Testing will be conducted in several venues around the country; please find further information attached and included below. All related queries should be directed to audiodescription@rnib.org.uk.

Information

Are you a blind or partially sighted person who would like to help make virtual reality (VR) and 360-degree videos more accessible? If so, we would love to hear from you!

WHAT IS THE STUDY ABOUT?

A growing number of formats are now available in 360-degree and virtual reality, from concert videos to games and documentaries but rarely are any of these available with audio description (AD). However, with these formats becoming more and more popular, it is important that we understand people’s experience and preference for the different styles of audio description that can be delivered on such content. RNIB is looking for people with sight loss to take part in research to explore these preferences and we are interested in all perspectives – whether you use audio description often or never; whether or not you use virtual reality or have never heard of it. Your participation and feedback will help us understand how virtual reality and 360-degree format can be made accessible and immersive with audio description. Eventually, it will help us develop guidance that we can share with the industry.

WHAT WILL I NEED TO DO?

We will ask you to watch a series of clips with audio description and audio subtitles. The clips will be in 360-degree format and you will be requested to wear virtual reality glasses and headsets. Afterwards, we will ask you some questions about your experience and what you thought of it. This should take around 1 hour.

WHERE AND WHEN IS THE STUDY?

The study will take place in several locations around the UK and will start in mid-January 2020. Dates are available to reserve now.
