MSSC Tandem Cycling 2018!

Tandem cycling with merton sports and social club ride

Merton Sports and Social Club For the Blind Tandem Cycling 2018!

One of MSSC’s New Year resolutions for 2018 will be to increase cycling events and spread the joy of tandem riding to as many members as possible. This means continuing to expand our pool of pilots, so we are not relying too heavily on the same willing few.

Our next training/confidence building workshop will be held at the Guardian Centre between 10.00am and 1.00pm on Saturday, 3rd February 2018.

Please spread the word amongst any keen cyclists you know who may be interested in learning to ride a tandem and feel free to forward this PDF

Confidence building/practice sessions with Richard will continue from 7.00pm
on Tuesday evenings at the Guardian Centre, preceding the club’s weekly
drop-in social at 8.00pm.  Apart from the second and fourth Tuesday of the
month, Russ is available from 7.30pm to supervise turbo training for those
who wish to improve their fitness.  This is an opportunity to work out, warm
up, then wind down and relax in the bar afterwards.

We aim to organise two club rides a month – one on the first Sunday and one
on the third Saturday, as follows:-

Week 1: a  relatively long, more demanding ride to suit experienced cyclists
Week 3: a shorter, less demanding ride to suit less experienced cyclists.

Solo cyclists are also welcome on any of our club rides.

In order to spread the workload involved in organising cycling events, we
are looking to form a team of volunteers to take a turn at helping to
co-ordinate rides.  The more volunteers, the lighter the load, so please let
us know if you would be prepared to be part of our team and help every so
often.

The schedule of rides for the first three months is as follows:-

  • Sunday 7th January
  • Saturday 20th January
  • Sunday 4th February
  • Saturday 17th Feb
  • Sunday 4th March
  • Saturday 17th March

There will also be a trip to Herne Hill Velodrome later in the year and a
long, all day ride in the summer, possibly  to the South coast and back.

If there is enough demand, we may also run  midweek evening rides through
the summer months.

Need some new cycling gear? Why not join us around 6.30pm on Thursday, 11th
January, for an hour or so of browsing and shopping at Evans Cycles,
Wimbledon?  MSSC members will be eligible for a discount.

We will then adjourn for a spot of socialising at the Wetherspoons next-door.  Let us
know if you would like to be met at Wimbledon Station.

For further information about any of the above or to register interest in a
particular ride, either as a pilot or stoker, or if you wish to book in for
a Tuesday training session, please find our contact details below.

And finally, we would like to remind you that subs for 2018 are due in
January.  Remember the £15 membership fee gives you access to all club
activities and events and provides you with third party insurance cover.

With very best wishes for fun festivities and a healthy and happy New Year,

Richard and Terry James
