Metro Bowls Pairs Tournament at Ravenscourt Park 2018
On Saturday the 2nd of June 2018, the annual Metro Bowls Pairs Tournament was held at the Ravenscourt Park Bowls Club. This year there were 8 players, so 4 pairs which meant each pair played 3 games of 100 minutes each.
We were fortunate that John Moran and Steve Simmons agreed to mark the games instead of playing as we don’t have any sighted markers. It was a lovely warm dry day, and all turned up on time for a 10.15 start. It was nice to see 2 of our new bowlers, Mariza Jurgens and John Roulton, taking part for the first time. In round 1, George and Wilbert came back after being 6- 2 down to beat Jackie and John.
In the other game, Eric and Junette managed to overcome Mariza and Constance following a close game, with Constance playing for the first time with her new coloured bowls. In round 2, Jackie and John played extremely well to beat Eric and Junette by 3 shots. George and Wilbert carried on the way they started and beat Mariza and Constance. In round 3, it was nice to see Mariza, who has only played 3 times before, with Constance beating Jackie and John, so both teams ended up winning 1 game out of 3.
In the only other game left, I think George and Wilbert started to tire in the heat allowing Eric and Junette to jump in and win easily. That meant that both these pairs had won 2 out of their 3 games, but Eric and Junette won the cup by having a better shot difference. Eric then thanked John and Steve for marking all day and Susan, the bowls club secretary, for making all the teas, coffees and soft drinks. Susan Doria, Ravenscourt Bowls Club secretary, then presented the cup to the winners Eric and Junette along with a bottle of whisky and vodka.
She also presented the runners-up pair George and Wilbert with bottles of wine. After leaving the bowls club, 13 of the Metro members went round to the local pub, where we usually go every Wednesday following our roll-ups, and had a jolly evening.
All enjoyed the day, and hope to do it all again next June, with hopefully more helpers.
