History of Metro VI Archery Sessions

Archery Sessions by Metro

At the end of 2012 forty-five people took part in two taster sessions.

Following this success and the positive response from participants, new monthly sessions began in May 2013. An organising sub-committee was formed (Fred, Liam, Rafal and Roy) and a venue found at Southfields Community College sports hall in Wandsworth.

Background to VI Archery

Many people are surprised that those with visual impairments can take part in archery; however it has a long history here in the UK, particularly amongst those who are totally blind. With the foot locater and aiming guide it is possible to access and compete in this sport, it’s then a question of persevering to achieve the right technique – and that’s the challenge.

Archery is a physical sport, so our coaches begin each session with a brief warm-up to loosen up the arms and shoulders. We shoot our arrows from what is known as a re-curve bow, similar to the type used in London 2012, although they are actually practice bows. With the success of many of our shooters, we have already experimented with moving the shooting line further back from ten to twelve metres. As confidence grows amongst our archers, it is hoped that in time we will be able to hold our own archery competitions at Southfields, so watch this space!
