Chris Lewis shares his Prudential Ride London 2017

The Surrey 46 is an opportunity to ride on London and Surrey roads without any cars. It is part of the Olympic road race circuit. For tandems, it cuts out the major Surrey Hills but is still a fantastic event to join.

From the start out in the Olympic Park at Stratford, through water and feeding points throughout the course, it is a pleasure to ride this event.

Yes, you need a good pilot to ride with and , yes, you should do significant training to avoid  major chaffing and getting absolutely knackered cycling over such a long distance but it is worth it, if only for the number of people who shout out “Oh look, a tandem”, “Go tandem” and for the comments from fellow riders such as the predictable “he’s not pedalling on the back” through “that’s not fair with two of your pedalling(usually going past people going down hill)”,  “I hope you two like each other a lot” and my favourite this time out “he’s asleep on the back”!

Prudential Ride London do a great job organising. No problem converting a ballot or charity entry into a tandem entry. Being part of this was a lot of fun.

I know various fellow Metro members were there. I passed one tandem and was passed by one going at an unbelievable speed so would love to know how they got on.
