Volunteers needed for Station Collections!

Blurred background image of inside of waterloo station with two red Metro Blind Sport Collection boxes framing this text in the middle "Volunteers Needed For Collection at Waterloo Station 26 August 2022"

Volunteers are needed for collection at Waterloo Station
on Friday 26 August!

Great news, Metro have the go-ahead to do a collection at Waterloo train station on 26  August from 7 am (catch the commuters!) until 7 pm.  As you can imagine, these opportunities help us to raise money to continue to provide support for sporting and social activities across London.

We can have up to 6 people collecting around the station at any one time and we are looking for people to come along and help us.  Assistant dogs are very welcome and if you would like to bring a friend for support that would also be welcome.

We will have a schedule so you can do as long or as short as you like.

People need to bring a photo ID and sit through a ten minute safety brief before starting.

If you are interested in being part of the day, helping us to raise awareness of the charity and to raise some funds, we would love to hear from you

You will be supplied with collection boxes and tee shirts which you will be able to keep as a thank you after the day is over.

Please reply to tracie.tappenden@metroblindsport.org with details of what you can offer on the day.

With very best wishes and grateful thanks

Tracie Tappenden
CEO Metro Bind Sport

What is goalball?

Goalball is an exciting, indoor, 3-aside team sport, of attack and defend – with
a unique twist!

The sport was originally devised in 1946 to help rehabilitate soldiers who had lost
their sight during the war. It has been played throughout the world ever since up to
the highest level as a Paralympic sport, by people who have visual impairments.

Goalball is a truly inclusive sport as fully sighted players can also play alongside
those with visual impairment as all of the players wear eyeshades so that nobody
can see the ball. Players, therefore, have to rely entirely on their other senses. It is
suitable for all ages and abilities

The ball contains internal bells so players are able to track its movement by its sound. The court is marked out with tactile lines so players can feel where they are.

The idea of the game is quite simply to score goals by bowling the ball along the floor, past the opposing team.

Goalball sessions are currently running at the Sir Philip Game Centre in Croydon for
