Morocco Adventure with SeeAbility

Traveleyes is owned by TV’s Amar Latif – (of ‘Travelling Blind’ fame). The company’s fabulous holidays provide a safe, comfortable and fun way for any visually impaired or sighted person to travel solo.

SeeAbility still has 4 places for visually impaired adventurers who want to do something extraordinary and raise valuable sponsorship money for the charity at the same time.

“It doesn’t take sight, but vision, and a spirit of adventure to explore the world…” Dr Brian Miller, visually impaired traveller

This year, SeeAbility turns 220 – and to celebrate we’re inviting you to join us on an extraordinary 5 day trek to the top of Mount Toubkal.

This tough but incredibly rewarding challenge is designed for beginners, but you must be comfortable hiking all day through moderately difficult terrain. Our route will involve steep climbs in high altitude (up to 4167 metres above sea level), mostly on upper foothill mule tracks that are seldom flat.

We’ll conclude our challenge in Marrakech where you can refine your bartering skills in the maze of souqs or perhaps you’ll head to a traditional hammam for some well-deserved rest and recuperation.

Costs

We ask participants to pay a £200 registration fee to book onto this trek.

You will then need to fundraise an additional £1,200. A portion of your fundraising will cover your challenge costs and the rest will go towards for SeeAbility’s life changing work and don’t worry, we’ll be there to support you every step of the way.

What’s Included?

Traveleyes group crossing a river in Morocco

We’ll be partnering with Traveleyes, the World leaders for group travel with blind and sighted travellers, who will provide participants with:

  • Flights and transfers from the UK (London Gatwick, times TBA)
  • All breakfasts, lunches and dinners
  • 3 full days trekking in the Atlas Mountains
  • 2 nights accommodation in Marrakesh
  • 2 nights accommodation in the Toubkal Refuge
  • Services of local guides

Blind & VI Bowls Videos Launch!

Our 3 new Blind & VI Bowls Videos Launched

On 29 May, Metro Blind Sport have released a new series of videos to improve the delivery, understanding and participation of visually impaired bowls.

A recent Sport England Active People Survey showed disabled people are half as likely to be active as non-disabled. With support from the Greater London Fund for the Blind and the Masonic Charitable Foundation, Metro Blind Sport has created a series of videos to help to reverse this trend.

The three bowls videos are designed to show how visually impaired bowls is played, how to take part and the benefits it has on participants. The videos will share first-hand experiences from people with a variety of visual impairments, so others can learn from their stories, helping them to understand the health and social benefits of playing bowls.

Blind and Partially Sighted Bowls Video Links Below

It is intended that the videos are used in bowls clubs, schools and sporting groups across the country to demonstrate how blind and partially sighted bowls is enjoyed by players all around the UK. The videos are an ideal resource for coaches who want to support the growth of visually impaired bowls.

Martin Symcox, CEO of Metro Blind Sport

“The videos have been made to make a positive change and support more people to reap the benefits of an active lifestyle through playing bowls. Bowls is such an inclusive sport and these videos are providing an understanding of how blind and partially sighted people can play sport and be active.”

Amit Amin, Double UK VI Bowls Champion and member of Metro Blind Sport

“For some time, we have needed a video to showcase blind and partially sighted bowls. Visually impaired bowls is an activity that can be played between sighted people and those with a visual impairment and I believe the videos will give more knowledge and confidence to support those people enjoying our fabulous sport.”

Metro Member’s first Swimming Session at the Northolt Leisure Centre in Ealing!

MSSC: Save our Swimming!

MSSC: SOS Save our Swimming!

SOS – Save our Swimming!

An important message from the MSSC Committee to all Merton Sports and Social Club Members and friends:

Time is running out for MSSC’s weekly swimming session, held each Thursday evening  at the Canons, Mitcham.  The club can no longer afford the huge subsidy required to run the one-hour, weekly swimming session, exclusive to MSSC members at a cost of £3 a head.   In order to reduce the subsidy and make this activity viable, we desperately need to increase the number of participants.

Come along and have fun, dip your toe in the water, take the plunge, go with the flow and help throw MSSC Swimming a lifeline.

Venue:     Canons Leisure Centre, Madeira Road, Mitcham CR4 4HD
Date: Thursdays, 30 May,  6 June
Time:          8.00pm to 9.00pm
Cost:         £3.00
Travel:    Buses 118, 127, 264, 270, 280, 355
Train & Tram: Mitcham Junction, Mitcham Tramlink Stop, Mitcham Junction Tramlink Stop
Contact:    Email:   swimming@mssc.org.uk or call TEL. 07500 913 223

Please do not hesitate to get in touch for further details.

There are just two more Thursday evening sessions, on 30th May and 6th June, before MSSC is required to sign a contract for a further three months.  It is with deep regret that the committee has reached the decision that, unless the number of participants increases significantly at each of those sessions, the contract, unfortunately, will not be renewed and the swimming sessions will cease at the end of June.

Swimming is a great exercise, and even simply bobbing about in the warm water is a wonderful feeling.  There is sighted support available, with getting in and out of the pool and using the changing facilities.

Those MSSC members, who regularly attend the session, say how massively they benefit, feeling relaxed and being able to swim freely, amongst a small number of friends in a large pool, accessible exclusively to MSSC members for that one hour.

For any members living in the borough of Merton, door to door transport is available, thanks to our dedicated volunteer drivers, at a further cost of £3 a head.  It may also be possible to arrange to meet people at a nearby train, tram or bus stop.
