We are once again hosting our spectacular annual Christmas Carol Concert at St Marylebone Parish Church on Thursday 6 December. All money raised from this event will help support thousands of blind veterans in finding life beyond sight loss.
There will be lots of festive carols, celebrity readings and musical delights during the evening, including mince pies!
Doors open at 6.15pm and the concert starts at 7pm. After the concert there will be a drinks reception in The Crypt underneath the church.

VICTA is teaming up with Extant, Britain’s leading professional performing arts company of visually impaired people, to provide a workshop day for 14-17 year olds during the February half term.
Interested in a career in the performing arts? Or just looking for something different to do in your half term? Extant’s workshops will give you an insight into the industry as well as help develop your creative skills with like-minded young people.

This is a fantastic opportunity to dive into the world of performing arts, whatever your preferred discipline and find out where it takes you!

Richard Wheatley who has attended both VICTA and Extant workshops and is now finding success as a comedian, having recently performed at the Edinburgh Festival, said of the benefits of performing:
“When I am on stage I know that I have control, no need to catch someone’s eye or shout to make myself heard. The only things I have to react to are the laughs of the people focusing on me, people who are reacting to me, a loop that starts with my antics and feeds back to me what I should do next.
People often say that performing comedy takes courage, and I’ll admit that before a gig I am usually nervous, but once I’m on stage it’s just like a conversation with friends. I’ve always enjoyed jokes and comedy, so it’s exactly how I communicate anyway”.

Title of the study: Exploring blind and partially sighted people’s preferences with regard to digital TV’s accessibility

Please read the following information carefully to decide whether to take part in this study.
The aim of the study is to explore blind and partially sighted people’s preferences for accessibility of digital TVs in the form of semi-structured interviews. You will be asked to talk about your experience of using the TV interface.
As you talk through your experience, you will be asked about the reasons for your preferences, concerns and recommendations that is related to the TV interface.
There are no risks associated with participation and there is no requirement to disclose any sensitive personal data about yourself.
Who will be involved in the study?
The study involves adults of different ages and sight conditions.
Your participation
Please ensure that you read and understand this information sheet, which you may keep for your records. Your participation in this study is entirely voluntary. Please read the consent form and sign it if you agree to participate in the study.
Please feel free to ask the researcher any questions before choosing to participate in this study also anytime during the study. Please note that you have the right to withdraw from the study at any time without giving a reason. If you withdraw after the study, your data will be excluded from subsequent use or analysis. There will be no adverse consequences for you if you decline to take part or if you withdraw during the course of the research.
Who will have access to your data and how will it be stored?
The research team involved in the data collection and analysis from RNIB will have authorised access to the full collected data. In addition, selected researchers may have access to the anonymised data in the future. Paper-based data will include the following: your consent form and your response to the interview. Paper-based data will be stored securely. In addition, Audio recording will be taken. The audio records will be stored securely in password-protected storages. All data will be stored according to the Data Protection Act 2018 and EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). All data will be stored for a period of time post-publication. After that, electronic files will be deleted and any hard copies of data will be destroyed.
How will your data be used?
Data from your participation will be used to explore the preferences of using TV interface. The data then used as a guideline and recommendation for service providers, designers and manufacturers, so that they make their design more accessible, more efficient and usable. The output will be disseminated in the form of a published report.
All reported findings will be made anonymous so that you will not be identifiable in any form of dissemination of this research (unless if you request this).
Findings will be released in the form of academic reports and may also be disseminated in peer-reviewed academic publications.
Who have reviewed the study design?
This study design has been reviewed by the RNIB’s Broadcast Relationships and Audio Description Manager in accordance with the GDPR and RNIB’s research ethics guidelines.

This research is being conducted by Ahmed Al-Talabany, Research Assistant Intern at RNIB and PhD Student at the University of Nottingham.
